Bio

Originally from Northwest Ohio and now based in Buffalo, New York, Hans Gindlesber’s artistic practice implements photographic imagery in considering issues of locality and displacement. With his projects I’m in the Wrong Film and Gone to Seed he crafts an absurd response to rural decline by employing elements of theater and silent film in manipulating the authenticity of the photographic document. His recent projects have grown to incorporate elements of video, sound, and site-specific installation. Binocular Project, an ongoing collaboration with Soyeon Jung, is a roving installation that mines the physical and psychological landscape of the geographic spaces in which it is situated. These projects and others are rooted in a need to recover a sense of belonging from a landscape that is increasingly in states of social, psychological, and physical flux.

Gindlesberger received his Master of Fine Arts in Photography in 2006 from the State University of New York at Buffalo. His photographic work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally and been featured in various publications. He is a 2008 fellow in Photography from the New York Foundation for the Arts. Currently, he is Visiting Professor of Photography at Marshall University.
