Rural Routes 1 & 4

Between 1962 and 1981 my grandfather was a mail carrier on Rural Routes 1 & 4 out of the Millersburg, Ohio post office. By the time he retired he had logged 250,000 miles without an accident. Recently, I have photographed and corresponded with residents along his old routes. These areas were some of the first in the country to receive Rural Free Delivery at the turn of the 20th century, but by the time I revisited them in the early 2020s the postal service was enmeshed in the pressures of politicization, privatization, and a deluge of mail-order deliveries amidst the pandemic.
