Profile of a Fence
2011
Profile of a Fence was commissioned by the Haggerty Museum of Art in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as part of a series of public window installations in the historic Concordia neighborhood.
The piece responds to Milwaukee’s status as the most racially segregated city in America. Employing the form of the silhouette and utilizing the passage of day into night, the work transforms with the passage of time, at first presenting an image of two figures isolated within their individual territories; then gradually revealing a cacophony of signs, projected in shadow, that point to the causes of segregation found in the geography, history, politics, and urban planning of the city.
