Family Album (Take What U Want)
2016
Rubbings from a two-volume family photo album. The subtitle, “Take What U Want,” refers to the instructions given to my father when he inherited the photographs. These rubbings conflate the alternate fates of the family album, as an artifact that is either cherished or met with indifference. Creating a rubbing of an object is a preservative act, akin to taking a photograph. Paradoxically, when applied to a photograph itself, the rubbed impression of its surface records little of its content or meaning and speaks to the inevitable loss of connection to family history.
Leather hardcover. Post and screw binding. 47 rubbings on tissue paper. 11″ x 9″
