A Second Retelling is an ongoing project with an interest in vernacular murals that depict local histories. The alternate reality of the mural, with its curious conflation of history and imagination, is used as a reference point in the creation of a series of documentary photographs.

Appropriating the gaze of the tourist, the photographer's observations respond to the narrative and sentiment found in the local mural, creating images from an outsider's perspective that counter the hermetic narrative that insulates the community.

The town of Glouster, Ohio was the initial subject for this investigation. A former coal mining boomtown, whose fortunes began to reverse course in the 1960s, it currently suffers from some of the highest poverty and unemployment rates in the country.
