Profile of a Fence
was commissioned by the Haggerty Museum of Art in Milwaukee, WI as part of a series of public window installations in the historic SoHi neighborhood.

The piece responds to Milwaukee's status as one of the most segregated cities in America, a statistic recently reaffirmed and widely publicized in a 2011 article in Salon. Employing the form of the silhouette and utilizing the passage of day into night, the work transforms over the course of a day, at first presenting an image of two figures isolated within their individual territories; then gradually revealing a cacophony of signs, projected in shadow, that point to the causes of segregation found in the geography, history, politics, and urban planning of the city.
